How common are 1945-S nickels? I have one that is well worn and is almost black. Were the San Francisco-minted coins for collectors only or did they make coins for circulation in 1945?

They are common to find. Still cool though. They have a mintage of about 59 million.

In 1943-1945 war nickels were minted, and the San Francisco mint minted as many war nickels as the Denver and Philadelphia mint. I have a 1943-s war nickel and many non war nickel dates: 1940-s, 1941-s, 1943-s, 2 1948-s, 1949-s...
In 1945 there were 101.1 million 1945-s made.

Thanks for the info. It might not be rare, but it's still pretty cool.

I also get a rush when I find silver (or any old, unusual, rare, or foreign coins.) I recently found a 1964 quarter in a roll and I was happier than a 7 year old on Christmas morning. I also found 24 silver dimes in the till, in rolls, and a couple of customers paid for their merchandise with them. I truly collect for the love of the hobby, not for fiscal reasons. I know my collection won't be enough to retire on (or even survive for a month) but I wouldn't trade it for anything because the collection is at least 50 years old (10 years older than me) as my grandparents started collecting coins in the '50s or '60s. I've added coins to the collection since I was a teenager or younger. I still add all coins that I find or buy to the collection (the collection is in a different state than I reside in) and the collection is quickly outgrowing its original box.

Jon, before giving out mintage information check the red book or something. Your mintage for the 45 S is off by about 40 million.

I had given the mintage of the 1943-s. I had later said that I had done this.
