So I have acquired my 7th Julia Maesa. One ive kept & rest are with new homes.

Im not gonna get into the details yet, I figured I would make this a game. Maybe some might learn something.

Below is my new Julia Maesa, there is something special about this coin, but can anyone guess as to what it is?

First clue this isnt a fouree & has nothing to do with size. Second clue is obviously not the run of the mill reverse type associated with her either. Third clue it isnt the die crack/chip on the nose.

    So what is it?

  3. Instead of the common "FECUNDITAS AUG" your coin has "FORTVNAE REDVCI?" aside from that... i don't know.

  4. or... 4 dots around the head of the cornucopiae? I can't find another reverse w/ those dots.

Since everyone else is ignoring this, I guess this is why I got the coin cheap.

Answer is engraver's error, that's Maesa's Fecunditas type, RIC 249 = RSC 8, and should have been labeled FECVNDITAS AVG. It has Elagabalus' FORTVNAE REDVCI type were being produced simultaneously, that is in 219 AD, the known date of the FORTVNAE REDVCI type.

There is about 5 other specimans, 2 were found online with the same reverse die as mine. But both had the younger bust of Maesa whereas mine has the older bust.

So a special coin I got cheap & several dealers have already been congratulating me on a great find and for so cheap.

Its also my first coin with an engravers error like this.

Ummm, is it her "nose", or her "ear", or is it that 5-iron that shes wearing around her neck?

This coin is great in many ways. Certainly the legend variation is enough but you have to love that swollen nose portrait.

Since we are playing 'What is special about Maesa', who sees anything different below? This comes with the same disclaimers of not fourree, damaged and also it is not barbarous.

Well, I can't play the games since I have no references with me, but both coins are very nice and I would like them both in my personal collection. My mailing address is.....
