I got this coin today from a bargin bin at my local coin shop. It has some luster, with toning but I'm wondering if the grade is a bit higher than what it says. The W is quite strong, where the E shows more wear. Its my nicest 2 cent peice and it looks amazing under the right light. The obverse is quite nice with low amounts of luster. I have an idea of what it grades. Its a nice coin non the less.
It may be my camera flash. I am still learning coin photography. It doesnt appear to be cleaned and its got some luster. It looks rubbed from circulation with some toning.
I'm inclined to agree with Simon. The color looks too good in the fields and there is significant buildup around the raised areas. I wouldn't say it's been scrubbed with a wire brush, but I think someone has spent some time sprucing it up. If you got it dirt cheap, it's still a great example of the type, cleaned or not.
I saw an AU 2 cent also and the surface looked to be about the same. I am not sure if has been cleaned
All comes down to price, so regardless of problems, as long as the coin was priced accordingly, there is nothing wrong with buying it. Beyond knowing the realities of the coin, the most important thing is that you like and will enjoy owning it. If you will, it was a fine purchase no matter what anyone else thinks.
Sorry - I can't go AU, I am in the upper end of VF, maybe XF40. From the pictures it does look like something was done to the surface. I can't say for sure, but can only go by the pictures. No matter the grade its still a nice coin.
I believe the picture is making it look a lot redder than it is. It may have been cleaned but yes, it was worth what I payed.
Quite true, but sometimes down the road we become disenchanted with such purchases. I think this has happened to many of us here.
Of course you are correct, but as we see on this site most every day, some will do whatever they wish and regardless of what we or anyone else tells them. If someone wishes to pick problems out of a bargain bin thinking the coins are some great find, or that they pulled one from under the dealer's nose, so be it. If they like to collect such coins, as long as they understand what they are buying and pay accordingly, I see nothing wrong with it, but if they stick with their hobby, sooner or later they may understand the folly of their ways. The best we can do is to provide correct information, but what they do with it is up to them.
