1954 S Jefferson Nickel - strange mint mark

I always check any 54-S Jeffy's that come through my hands for the S/D variety.
It's pretty clear when it is the S/D. When it;s not the S/D it's also pretty clear.

Then this one showed up. It doesn't bear any resemblence to an S/D omm or an rpm.
Any thought on what may have happened here? Possible just a die chip or something else more sinister?

I have a 54 with a mint mark identical to that one and wonder the same thing. Someone made a thread once with another 54 S just like this but e never got any responses.

Here are photos of the 1954-S/S and 1954-S/D for comparison.

The 1954-S/S is just an example photo, but I do own the 1954-S/D.

Greg - it looks like it's a different version of the S/D, an S over horizontal D. From what I can see in CONECA that would be a previously undiscovered variety.

Well that certainly sounds interesting. If I can figure out the procedure, I will send it over to James Wiley and see what happens.

I don't know. Looks like a pretty typical "Tall S" mintmark. Many that are punched deeply show the big lump in the lower loop. In fact, that is one of the characteristics I use to differentiate the two S styles from 1952 and 1953

I say submit it, but with your luck it would come back details "added mintmark". o_O
