Rim nicks on the first one might hold it at MS65 the second looks like a lock on MS66.

hmmmm, coin looks dull, I don't see any luster... maybe it's just the pictures. I'm going to say UNC details.

If it's just the pictures and the coin does have luster, I'd say MS65, don't know if it'd hit a 66. Mark on the neck of the second coin might hold it back from a 67.

When i take pic with alot of luster close up it wipes out all the luster. Here is a pic that i took at a distance.

PCGS Gen.jpg With the rim nicks on 81S don't be surprised if it come back as a Genuine 82 or 98. The 79S MS65

I'm not saying that won't happen - but it shouldn't. But your example illustrates where coin grading is subjective and sometimes inexplicable.

Too bad the first one has the rim nicks and scarring on the neck, or it would definitely score more than an MS-65, but the 65 should be easily met in current condition. The second, as everyone else stated is a solid MS-66, possibly good enough to earn a "jelly bean."

I can't get a feel for the luster and such. Both look very clean - I will just say MS-64/65. As for the rim ticks - I have seen worse grade and some not as bad go into details holders. Part of the human equation in the tpg grading.

The distant picture does show more luster than the up close pictures. Not sure how that happens.

    Good Luck!

    I think MS64 and MS66.

    1881s--UNC details--damaged
1879s--MS 64--looks slightly overdipped, but will grade.

My vote first 64+ or 65 the nicks may hold it back from a 65 and the 2nd a solid 66 or even 66+ and worthy of a jellybean

First one, I think is UNC details Damaged or otherwise MS-65. Second one, is a strong 66 and it IS worth a Cac sticker.

I'll go with Mark_h, I don't think those rim nicks are enough of a hit to hold the coin back. also as mentioned sometimes the grade depends on the moon phase or how many times the grader's dog wagged it's tail or...
