what caused this? 197? cent

    also looks like a crack d in united to e in one. and is it worth more than a cent?

    You sure? It certainly looks more like a dryer cent to me...all the contact marks and unusual spread/shape of the words is consistent with post-mint damage.

    I agree with non cents about being a clothes dryer coin . the poor old cent has been literally beat to death. I bet it has seen many battles.
