I would agree that no nice coin should ever be cleaned, but sometimes they are already damaged and conservation/cleaning is required to mitigate the damage. Many do not see a difference and many use conservation as an excuse to "improve" the immediate appearance for quick sales. I deal in a series where most of the coins have been cleaned/conserved in some manner at some point. Some were indeed helpful, but most were not.
Sometimes you have to clean some coins. Once had a Speared 2000 P Sac ...looks like someone had handled it with a sticky glazed donut stuff. had to put it in acetone and give a nice cloth rub.. sent it to ANACS ..sold it on ebay ..then I saw it in a PCGS holder for sale again with the same grade MS64 I recognize the area where I had to fix it ... very unique .....so sometimes it has to happen..
I homestly don't think the original coin posted is that bad looking. It still looks nice in my eyes, and it is probably cheaper than a 100% original example. I am in no way trying to condone cleaning coins, but not all of them are as bad as people make them out to be.
We also have no idea if this WAS a beautiful coin before it was cleaned and retoned. It might have looked worse than this. Oh I'm sure it was beautiful once, but that just means we should not use our coins and get them worn.
