Great information. I have also explained the above to numerous people at coin shows that I attend monthly. I also happen to own quite a few of them. None graded, as of yet. I picked up a couple from Ebay. One of my 1958 type 2 is proof like. I will put pictures up on my website @ www.ronblank.net

    Thanks
    for the artical.

Wake this thread back up because I need more info on Franklin Halves for a type set I am making.
    Anyone here?
Question is about another type 1 type 2 variety from 48, 49 and 50.

I recently picked up this 1958 Type 2.
It looks like it spent decades in an album.
It is sub variety # II-D-3 indicated by the 2 die cracks on the eagle and the large die break on the eagles wing.
I like the bell lines on this coin.

Out of all my years searching, I have never found a mint set with both a Type A Quarter and Type I Half. The ones that I have searched have always been paired with a Type B quarter and Type II half.

You must mean "PROOF" sets and not "MINT" sets.
The TypeII Franklin has never been found in a mint set, thats why its almost impossible to find gem TypeII Business Strike Franklins.

I guess you haven't fully read this whole thread...... The Type II reverse is found all some proof dated 1956 and on all proofs to 1963. This thread is talking about the 1958 and 1959 UNC/business strike Franklins where some proof dies were used in their striking. Therefore, both years have Type I and Type II reverses.

My comments above are correctly stated (although I should have stated "1959 Mint sets") My hands sometimes type faster than my mind thinks.

If you haven't done so, go back and read the OP's article. It is very well written and very informative.

    Yes thats right.
1958 Type 2 reverse Franklins have never been found in a MINT set.
1959 Type 2 reverse Franklins can be found in mint sets.
I posted a picture of my 1958,so thats what I thought you were talking about.

I knew about this and have been searching for many years.

Now that the cats out of the bag for those that didn't like the Franklin series, I guess now it will be a coin to be looked at closely for now on. Great post.

For those who really need one of these for their sets there are a couple of Type 2's on eBay at the moment.

    Here

    Here

And if you have deep pockets and want the best look HERE

And no, none of these coins are mine nor do I know any of the sellers.

I'm just bored and I thought I'd see how many I could find, :D

I had to go through 10 pages of coins just to find these 4....

I am reviving this thread to get some more recent opinions. I have seen speculation that '57, and '60 - '63 business Type II's exist. Any new info out there? I'm setting up my book and need to know if I should leave spots for them.

    TIA for any info

It has always been speculated that there were Type II's for the 56-63 series because Type B's reverses had been found on the quarters, but to my knowledge none have been found other than 58 and 59. Good luck! Keep us posted if you find anything otherwise.

Glad to see this revived. I have been working on an UNC set that includes all of the major varieties and as many of the minor varieties as I can find. I rarely see it mentioned, but one source suggests that there may be two different reverses on some of the early 50 coins as well. Both have four feathers on the left side (your left), but the gaps between the feathers are significantly different. Admittedly, it could be die wear, but to my eyes, they look like distinct types.

BTW, I'm not sure what the policy is about identifying other web sites in a message, but if it is permitted, and if anyone wants to know where this info came from, reply to this thread and I will give the web site.

Just wanted to say thank you to the OP for this informative thread...just picked up a 1959 Mint set with a Type 2 Half and Type B quarter, as well as a raw 1958 Type 2 half from a Dansco album in the same shop. I think the 1959 will grade as a HBL..."Half Bell Lines." There are almost none on the left side. :)

This brings my "hoard" of Type 2's up to 3 1959's and 1 1958. No luck on any other dates so far.

Ben good job. Forget the 59 T2. It's too common. More than half of the 59T2 are found in mint sets along with the type b quarters. 58's are definitely tougher. I would focus on the 59 DDR. It is common enough that u will find them out there with a little looking but not common in super high grades. No body looks for them and they are an easy pick up. I used to have a small hoard of them but sold them all off. I kept some of the nicer ones. The Ngc 59 DDR pics are of my coin. It was the second one graded by Ngc.
