I for one plan to buy the gold and the set....here is a look at the coins...nice looking coins to say the least. RickieB
neat looking coin. go for it if that is you thing. Just so much stuff out there. Today i read something about a morgan commerative. First i have heard of that .
Well if I don't buy them they will immediately jump in value and if I do buy them they will decrease in value! At least that seems tobe my track record with mdern commems!
Im sorta not looking forword to O7 coinage that much. Theres just going to be to many new coins AGAIN . it seems more like an exploit then a hobby nowadays.
i always thought that the mint could only do 2 commerative coins/programs a year nowadays. or is 2 commeritive programs a year too much?? you guys should be happy you werent collectors in the 1930's if 2 is too much for ya. i am very happy to be a coin collector in 07
I am very excited for the 2007 Jamestown dollars. Part of that excitement is my weakness for ships on coins.... They just look great to me! Another part of that is the truely historic theme for the coins. What I mean is you can't get much more relevant to U.S. history than the settlement of Jamestown...
Count me in on this one and I am not a fan of the commeratives. Jamestown is something magical to me though. I go there 3-4 times a year. I hear that the Queen is going to show up for the festivities. Maybe I will make that and get me some Maudy or whatever its called.
Traditionally I've bought my 13 nieces and nephews a proof ASE for X-mas. Next year I want to get them the proof Jamestown S$. I'm hoping they will let me order 15 when they come out.
Thats my point whenever I didn't buy that commens thay went up and the ones I have bought really haven't done much. But I have resolved to try to buy one of each future commen, but the way the mint is cranking these things out I don't know if I can keep up and still work on my nickels.
I plan on getting a set. I may lose a few dollars here and there on purchasing comm. dollars, but every now and again, they may skyrocket. I have just gotten back into collecting coins, and wish i had gotten in on the Buffalo Dollars when they went for 35-39 bucks! It's really incredible how much those are going for!!! i really enjoy what I'm doing with the few extra bucks that I have. I really don't expect to get rich or anything doing this, it's just a fun way for me to spend my free time.
The problem is it isn't just one coin though. The mint is restricted to 2 commems a year, but to get around that they issue two different designs under one theme. The Ben Franklin set is an example, young scientist and elder statesman. So now you have two designs to buy. Then you have to buy an uncirculated finish and a proof finish. Now up to four. Then don't forget the Legacy Collection, a pricey little box with the years commems in it. Now up to five different purchases. And of course depending on what the other theme for the year is, you want a complete set of that coin as well so you have both that come in the Legacy Collection. Ten coins, all never to circulate, all basically bullion, and we hope they go up in value. Sometimes I think that P.T. Barnum was correct...
I generally equate commemorative coins with bullion coins, and only purchase them when they are below melt value. There's something about the production of coins specifically for collectors instead of for circulation that bothers me. But if there is a $5 gold commem for Jamestown, I might purchase it. We'll see.
