MY mother-in-law gave me a 1980 isle of Man crown today. It is a commemorative of the winter Olympics in Lake placid. I was looking in ngc for info about the coin and it said the regular strike was copper-nickel and there was a silver proof strike, and silver matte? This coin doesn't look like a proof strike, but a magnate is not attracted to it at all. Am I correct in thinking a magnate would be attracted to a copper nickel coin? Should I assume it is silver since it is not magnetic at all? How would I tell if it was a matte strike?
I am not familiar with that particular coin, but no silver or copper-nickel coin is attracted to a magnet. Matte proofs have a silky appearance almost like it has been blasted with a fine powder.
It definitely isn't a matte strike. It shines and doesn't have a silky appearance. I haven't dropped it yet to see if it rings like silver. I'm very familiar with that sound... For now I will assume it is copper nickel.
