I'm not sure if the word "error" is correct or not, but if you had a coin that had a weak strike, or it was struck through grease, but otherwise a flawless, I imagine that it wouldn't grade as high as a coin without those issues. At what grade would be its limit? Thx.

Well, I see Ms65 as the general limit for weak- struck coins. I have seen numerous Walking Halves and Jefferson nickels that can't be graded any higher (66) than their respective grade(65). Struck through grease, I consider a technical error, but I do not collect them.

The opinions on this subject are so wide-ranging, that the best practice is, rather than to place much emphasis on grade, to consider appeal alone in determining whether the price is appropriate. A great example is a coin I just sold, and may be seen at http://www.toughcoins.com/error-1.00-ike-major-filled-dies.html

Hope this helps . . . Mike at ToughCOINS
