Hey folks, I picked this large cent up to fill a hole in my type set until I can replace it with a better looking one, but I figured I'd give the large cent guys something to do in the meantime.

So I need help dating this one. When was it minted, should I just ask her out, become besties with her father or what? An attribution would make it much more fun too.

    Found it! It's a 1797 S-131 (R2).
I was able to match the Cud on the Obverse at 10 o'clock, as well as the T in Cent in regards to leaf coverage on bottom of T, along with Berry placement on the reverse.

    Cool little coin there!

Very cool! Thanks. I kind of figured the partial cud would help in attribution.
I swear when I was looking it I saw a 1 and thought 1801 but that matches the S-131. Thanks for the help again.

You Copper guys still impress me with your skills.

I don't think it was a bad buy at $4. Though I don't think any draped bust cent is a bad buy at $4.

Geez, I would have to agree. Any draped bust cent that doesn't look like a blank planchet is a steal at $4. Your's is no exception.

That's the hard part about attributing some of these coppers, you can easily see ghosts :) Very nice pickup at $4!

The cud on the obv is very distinctive and instantly says S-129 thru 131, The stemless wreath then says 131 or NC-8, The gap between the ends of the wreath centered below the space between ES says 131. On NC-8 the gap is centered below the serif of the S. When I saw the cud I started hoping, when I saw the stemless wreath I really started hoping. It would have been so great to have been able to tell you you had the second known NC-8.

And $4 is an absolute steal for this coin. I'd have easily paid between $50 and $75 for it.

(And before anyone gets upset, that is not an offer to buy it. I already have an S-131. :) )
