I guess I saw this coming, but I shure hope that the combination of the three companies won't drive up prices too much. I always found TTs auction prices very reasonable and in line with market prices. Stacks auctions, on the other hand, have always seemed high.
They can call the site whatever they want, until they lower the ridiculous buyer fee and fix the bid system, I won't touch them.
Doubt it will have any impact in that regard at all. As for Stacks, in years past what they were selling directly, meaning not at auction but inventory, yeah I'd agree they were high. But when Dave Bowers (ANR) merged with them that changed and things more into line with the market in general. As for their auctions, I'd have to say it never really mattered much. Realized auction prices are driven purely by the buyers, not the auction house. And any auction house, if they offer exceptional coins, those coins will bring exceptional prices. But I gotta say I'm not too fond of what's happened in the last few years with Spectrum Group, they have literally been buying up everybody ! If this keeps up it's gonna get to the point where we only have 2 left - Heritage & them. And I wouldn't want to see that.
I sure hope that you are right about the prices Doug. When I say that Stacks always seemed high to me, I am talking about the buyers of course. It just seemed that Stacks would always have a large portion of the high dollar buyers in the croud there for some of the show stopper coins. There is no way that I can, or will try to, outbid buyers like Steve or Lee. Two entirely different worlds of buyers.
So does this happen immediately? I guess Teletrade certainly anticipated it this year by matching the Stack's buyer's fee. I'll monitor the Teletrade site and see what changes occur and when. I guess something had to happen, because TT seemed to be in some trouble and unable to maintain itself in its current model. Let's see if it improves things. But now I don't see much of a change.
First off, couldn't you have said this in the same post as the one where you pasted the letter? Secondly, you forgot the operative word of "combined" and replaced it with "over," thereby completely misrepresenting what was actually said. They have a combined 1250 years of experience among their staff. That's not a false statement. Saying they have "over 1,250 years of experience" (as you stated it) is a false statement.
Nothing against Detecto or North Korea but maybe it makes his head hurt? I'm just being silly. And maybe eBay too?
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I practice and disgrace myself most notably and most often...........
Heck, I knew what you was sayin' Tim....... And that kind of 'speak' always turns me off. Overkill as far as I'm concerned..............
At Least Bowers and group did say 'combined ' 1250 years of experience. Detecto quoted the whole letter, and then when he brought up one portion , he not only misquoted it once, he did in two posts removing combined for 'over'. And I must admit that some of my best coins came from Bowers and Merena's shop. Yes, they were higher than the average mail order firms, but they had a unbeatable guarantee/ return policy. I returned a couple of 1972/72 doubled dies until I was satisfied. If Bowers is involved in the grading /cataloging process, I will be an interested reader. Sometimes I think that most of the complaints against dealers are from those who could not properly evaluate a coins grade and value themselves, so they have to buy the cheapest 'carp' so if they are wrong ( as usually) , they hope they can eek out a fair percentage. Knowledge is priceless, Ignorance is pricey .
well GD has over 10000 years experience by himself, that has never bothered you maybe we can ask him to tell us how he felt at 1250 and how many coins he got right then
