Hi folks, I am getting this coin in a trade. I think it's a tetradrachm but don't really know anything about it. Appears to be someone holding something (possibly a scale?) on one side and a person riding a horse on the other. Any more info, and potential value for this coin? I'll try to get better pics when it arrives. Thanks, Simon
Any chance of Azileses? But yeah, Indo-scythian and not Kushan. Btw, did you notice the horse's head? Doesn't that look a little strage? I have never seen one of these with that extra tuft of hair on the head hanging down onto the face. It could just be something on the coin, or the pic though.
I bet you its a later imitation of an Azes Era drachm or tetradrachm..... Is it bronze or silver? This is my tetradrachm
http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/indo_scythians/azes_II/t.html Wildwinds lists a billon drachm (second coin down). I have not studied these but 16mm is too small to be a tetradrachm.
Doug is right- my tetradrachm is 24.7 mm x 8.76 g described as silver but I am sure it is debased. At 16 mm your coin would be a drachm.
What is with the interesting "squiggly" P (or other letter) in front of the horse? Is that the mint mark?
I have no idea....I honestly don't have the mark described in my notes. I was understanding that the mint mark and/or monograms where on the reverse of the coin... Does anyone have any ideas?
Ugh, I paid like $50 bucks for my Tet. I would say your drachm is worth 1/4 my tetradrachm so I would guess $12.50?
