I acquired this at a show this past weekend. The dealer said he had no clue as to what it is or era it is from other than what it says. I am thinking it may be depression scrip but am unable to find any info. I have sent emails to the Lamar county Chamber of Commerce and the historical society inquiring about the signature and past Chamber of Commerce presidents. Lamar County Chamber of Commerce issued 5 cent scrip. The signature looks like T. E. Belew. I found a Thomas Eugene Belew in the 1940 census residing in Paris, TX with an occupation listed as proprietor (unable to see the 1930 census). I haven't found anything on the Trust Officer signature which I think reads Monro Fleming. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
My guess based on the paper stock is that it is 1930s era - I have never seen one from Texas before and that is a really nice example.
Thanks. That is why I am thinking it is depression scrip. I would like to know for sure though. I am hoping to find out what other denominations where printed and printing numbers. I do not know much about depression scrip. No matter what this is a excellent addition to my collection. Especially for what i paid for it. I am looking for The Standard Catalog of Depression scrip. I lost one on eBay last night. Hoping someone here has one to see if there are any listing for Lamar county or Paris, TX.
Based on the indenture it is clearly depression scrip. I will check my Mitchell-Shafer this evening to let you know whether it is catalogued.
I checked the Paris News on NewspaperArchive.com. Unfortunately it is missing the issues from early 1933 and there does not appear to be any reference to scrip in the newspaper from September 1933 and later.
Found a couple articles. January 1, 1934, Article about events in the previous year. $25,000 in scrip issued in March 1933. October 31, 1937 in a The Paris Evening Newspaper series called "The History of Lamar County" $25,000 in scrip issued by Lamar County Chamber of Commerce in .05 cent to $5 denominations. After the banks reopened they started turning in the notes. Now I wonder if there is record of how much was collected, canceled, and were not accounted for.
