Hi folks, Recent ebay purchase. Wondering what you think this one would grade. The odd yellow-ish coloring is showing up much stronger in the pictures than it does in-hand (I boosted contrast to get the best details of the coin). Thanks, Simon
I'm thinking of sending it to NGC, but am not a member. There are no places around me that assist with submissions...is there anyone here that can help me out? I have never sent in a coin before.
I would say you did well. I think $200 minimum would be appropriate if it grades as I think it will. As to your grading question: are you a ANA member? If so then you get direct submission privileges. If not look into it. www.money.org < their site. If you decide not too, I am sure somebody can help you out.
I'm not yet a member, but I'll look into it. For now, I am just looking for someone to help me submit it through them.
Could you please elaborate on what you see that indicates a cleaning? I'm not really seeing any hairline scratches on the coin in person...
The color, the dark toning around the stars and the shiny look to the fields on the obverse. Not possible to tell anything about the reverse from the images.
Your observations and concerns are sound...though, I would still like to send it in and see what a TPG would say...
With an NGC premium membership, you can issue 5 coins for free - or let's say they're included in the annual fee. I am not trying to advertise anything, but planning to submit my top 5 US coins soon...
I may save up for the premium membership so I can get the 5 free submissions. That averages out to $25 per submission..but does that include the shipping, too?
1835 half dimes on heritage at XF45 sold for $80 to $100 depending on variety. To me it looks XF details - just too hard to see in the dark images. Hopefully it does not come back in a details holder. Good Luck. If nothing else it will be a good educational experience. If I was you I would find a local dealer to send it in. And maybe even give you an opinion on the coin.
A member has offered to help me submit this coin to PCGS, and I will be doing so. I'll let you guys know the results when I hear 'em!
Time to bump, just got the results back. XF details, env. damage. Oh well. That's a lot better IMO than a cleaning. Still a pretty coin, and will go nicely in my 1835 date set.
Can you actually look at that coin and say it was not cleaned? There is not enough room for the TPG to list all the problems. They list the worst problem and that's all that's needed. Sorry but the coin is just what it is. With that said, I have a lot of problem coins in my collection but they will stay raw because I know they are problems. I don't need the holder to remind me that I made a mistake when I bought it. The truth can really suck sometimes.
The pictures did a really bad job at capturing the coin, but in-hand I can pretty confidently say that it was not cleaned. I personally don't really consider it a "mistake" that I bought it. I am relatively happy with the coin and regardless of what any TPG says, I think it will look nice in my collection.
