Insured for $15 million, a unique set of four 1783 Nova Constellatio pattern coins will be displayed Aug. 13 to 17 in Rosemont, Ill.
The pieces represent “undoubtedly the first patterns for coinage of the United States,” according to Sylvester S. Crosby in Early Coins of America. "

Awww... Robert Morris was so funny, vainly trying to get his system approved(we all know how that worked out:D ). He was so desperate that he struck his own patterns.

Saw them at the ANA show in Chicago in 2011. They will probably be back in 2014 and 2015 as well.

vlaha, wrong Morris. Gouverneur Morris came up with the plan and had the patterns created. And if you are creating an entire new system, what would be so surprising to create patterns to illustrate it. We created patterns for the US coins, 1792 half disme and disme, the silver center cent, the Birch cent, the copper 1794 half dollar and dollar, tThe 1856 FE cent was a pattern, the 1864 small moot proof 2 cent was a pattern the proof 1866 shield nickels are patterns, Jarvis created a pattern for the Fugio, In 1967 when New Zealand switched to the decimal system they created plastic "coins" to be used to train tellers to recognize the new coins and become familiar with handling and counting in the new system. They also made "practice sets" of Euro coins available in 2001 so people could get used to them before the went active in 2002.
