Here is another Elagabalus I purchased at the same time as the "Die Match" I posted earlier. I believe this is my first and only coin depicting Ares, the Greek God of War: Elagabalus AE26 OBV: AVT K M APH ANTWNEINOC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right REV: VP OBI...NIKOPOLEITWN P RO CIC-T-PON across, Ares standing front, head left, naked, resting hand on shield, holding spear Struck at Nikopolis ad Istrum under Legate Rufus, 218-222 AD 14.48g, 26mm Moushmov 1377 From Wikipedia:
The left reverse legend is Vpi NOBIOV POVphOV naming Novius Rufus the magistrate responsible for the issue. It is a nice coin!
Nice indeed. I did consider a collecting theme on Ares coins at one point but it fell by the wayside as my collection went in different directions. A quick search showed up this double die match (Forum member galleries):- It had the additonal attributions of AMNG 1916, Varbanov (Eng.) I, 3969 . Regards, Martin
Wow, another nice coin, big fella!! => geeesh, you've been quite a big-spender this month!! (I thought you'd be saving your cash for your upcoming Rome trip?)
I've got four more coins coming this week hopefully. And yeah, I should have cooled my heels a bit before this trip coming this weekend, but I just couldn't help myself. Thanks Doug. I've added that to my description in my catalog. And thanks to Martin for the other references. They've been added as well. I wonder, how easy it seems to find die matches for these coins from Nikopolis. Could this be because of a limited production of coins in this location during Elagabalus' reign?
very nice, that emerald green patina is great....and got some meat on its bones i see , nice and heavy.
