I bought another Elagabalus AE coin this week from one of my favorite dealers in GB. The portrait on this new coin looks like a die match to another Elagabalus AE coin I purchased from her a few months ago. First, my newest coin: Elagabalus AE27 OBV: AV K M AVRH ANTWNEINOC, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right REV: VP NOBIOV ROVFIOV NIKOPOLITWN PROC ICTRON, Serapis standing left, holding sceptre and raising right hand Struck at Nikopolis ad Istrum under Legate Rufus, 218-222 AD 12.22g, 27mm Moushmov 1443 Now, my other coin, same mint, AE26 Struck at Nikopolis ad Istrum under Legate Rufus, 218-222 AD 14.13g, 26mm Moushmov 1433
I don't see the clue. I see the wear difference. Perhaps the "K" might signal that the first coin above was the second coin struck?
If there is a die break at the K and the eagle coin shows it less severely broken, then that coin would seem to be earlier. Now the challenge is to find another coin with no break in that location and another with a break twice the size of the worst here. I have known people who specialized in broken dies.
Ha! I was correct then. Maybe I'm getting better at this. But then again..... I'll be keeping my eyes open for another match. Thanks Doug
Patience may well lead you to finding die matches now that you are looking for them. This one isn't mine but a double die match to our eagle.
That's a great find Martin. I'm not so certain I am very good at identifying die matches. This one was rather easy for me, but I will be looking. Hmm, where did you find that reverse?
Great new coin, Bing => congrats, my friend!! Sadly, I am the worst at die-matching and/or spotting the difference ... ... but "enjoy" (I admit that it is a valuable life/coin-skill) => I wish that I was far more patient ... and/or had far more spare time!! (congrats, again!!)
i'm also horrible at picking them out...but like seeing them when someone shows me...pretty nice coins everyone.
