Red/brown obverse and brown reverse on this farthing but plenty of color with a slight tilt to the lens.

Well done Derrick, I've noticed that GV South African coins are a pain in the arse ! They are either drilled, worn badly, or have one side worn too.. So to see a nice example like that is a breath of fresh air !

I am no expert on these, but it looks OK to me. I take it by counterfeit you are referring to the evasion coins - contemporary counterfeits, mostly struck in the US around Independence? Some of these were very close to the originals, some a long way off, often including satirical comment at the British. If this is an evasion, it has stuck very close to the original. An idea of diameter and weight my help the more knowledgeable.

A bit of an indication here why scale is so important - I think the one you are looking at on Ebay is a Farthing not a Halfpenny. Here are 2 from my collection - the halfpenny on the left, the farthing on the right. Scale below is in 1/16th inch. The proportions of your coins seem far more in line with the farthing.

Some years ago, I was in Aus at a coin shop in Adelaide. Decided there and then I will start a coin collection. I bough the whole shop's inventory of SA coins. Some of those are worth some serious money today. I am happy that the coin community is picking up in SA now with first third party grading company.
