looks like copper plating removed with harsh acid

It appears to have been stripped of the copper plating. Is it slightly larger than a normal cent?

Jallen- The coin doesn't look to be larger and it weighs 2.5grams. Thanks!

It's been stripped of it's copper plating. Not much else I could say.

The part that doesn't resonate well with me about 'stripped' is the way the copper flows around when the planchet is stamped [ preferentially to the zinc]. It is the Cu that fills up the devices and even leaves those tell tale thin spots under the edges. Grind off any good condition zinker and you find nearly solid Cu devices. If you strip that the coin should be nearly featureless???

No, acid could do that. Also there are black spots on it which could be residual corroded copper. Also that features on that coin aren't as good as you can get. [IMG]

Have you tried it? I should do an experiment ...

It's actually a very common science experiment for middle schoolers and high schoolers to do. I have tried it in a classroom setting and at home, and have seen the same exact results as the original coin above.

I think you have a big misunderstanding about the copper plating on Zinc Cents. It's not the copper that "fills up the devices." The copper plating on these cents is only a few microns thick.

Here is the 1995 zinc D penny I have. As you can see, it is slightly bigger than the normal penny. Is this an error coin? And what's it worth

One cent, with the right acid you could make every copper plated cent you have look just like it.

No it is not an error, it is an altered coin. It is what is referred to as a "Texas cent" (because everything's bigger in Texas). It is created by putting the coin between two pieces of leather and then beating it. The leather conforms to the surface so the blows are distributed to the entire surface evenly causing the coin to spread out proportionately. It also causes the copper plating to flake off when done to plated zinc cents. Value is one cent, you might get a little more as a novelty.
