I bought this guy today... Anyone want to take a crack at how this happened?

Just to be sure, can I assume that everything on the coin is raised?

Second question. Is the diameter normal or larger than normal?

It's slightly out of round 19.53mm by 19.56mm

it appears that it was double struck, first time in the collar and second time out of the collar.

I suspect you are right, but I also suspect there is something else going on

it's almost like it was struck in the collar the first time and it was a partial collar the second strike... but the edge doesn't indicate this... It's just strange how the doubling is so different from one side to the other.

Very strange indeed. Perhaps counterfeit dies? But it looks too legit!

If not, just looking at the obverse, it appears to have been struck once within the collar, normally, and struck once again out of the collar but still centered in the chamber, and this time having rotated clockwise apx. <5 degrees.

But I can't explain why an additional off-center strike is evident on the reverse.

Maybe some sort of press malfunction... die misalignment or something?

Who knows! I'm still examining this thing and just can't wrap my mind around it. I showed your pics to an associate here at the shop and was stumped like I am.

Before sending it to a TPG, get an expert's opinion. Weinberg or Diamond might provide insight.

Yeah I posted it over there as well. I'm interested to hear what those guys have to say about it.

I think you're right... but where's evidence of a third strike on the obverse?

Could it be an end of run strike? i.e. the press was stopped before it had a full strike

Interesting theory. I was thinking something along those lines.

The obverse die was not in the chamber, or perhaps malfunctioned, leaving only the reverse die to produce an image on the coin? I dunno!

Whoo! Awesome toning. Lots of colors and I love the details of the wheat stalks. They look like they have been polished.
