Hi Guys, Ok this is it I saw my dealer today and this is what he will give me for my silver. 1964 Kennedys $4.00 EACH 40% KENNEDTS $1.35 EACH SILVER QUARTERS $2.00 EACH Sounds good to me his shop is only a 10 mimute drive from my house and I am only going to get rid of 40 of each for now what is your opinion ? Bruce " THE FRANK GROUP"
The actual silver value in each coin follows, so naturally the dealer has to eat, and then there are the smelting costs, etc. So, it seems somewhat reasonable to me, in my modest opinion, as someone who can't stand to sell anything. 1946-1964 Dime $0.10 $0.9975 1932-1964 Quarter $0.25 $2.4938 Franklin Half 1948-1963 Half Dollar $0.50 $4.9877 JFK half dollar 1964 Half Dollar $0.50 $4.9877 40% JFK 1965-1970 Half Dollar (40% silver) $0.50 $2.0394
Roughly 80% of melt for a small quantity, with no shipping expense and very little inconvenience sounds pretty fair to me, considering that the dealer needs to make a profit, and he's taking the risk of a market drop before he can dispose of the coins.
The prices for the 64 kennedys and quarters are reasonable. The price for the 40% silver kennedys looks low. But my real opinion is that this is a terrible time to be selling silver unless you absolutely must have the money. I think the people selling silver now will be kicking themselves in a few years. But then, that's only my OPINION and I can't back it up with any proof. The advice is worth what you paid for it.
I agree with Cloudsweeper , in a couple of years silver will be what you want , I am new to the coin collecting as an investment but I do have quit a bit of silver and gold that I have had for a few years and let me tell you , it is VERY tempting to sell it all right now with the raise in metal prices the past few years , most of my silver I got when it was around $5.00 oz , keep telling myself that when it hits $20.00 oz I am selling ,but then I will never be able to replace it , so keep it for some really tough times.
I just looked in the Dec. Miller's Mint flyer and found this at the end: {I had to extract this from a pdf file and add it in here - both processes might screw up the following text! We shall see}
dealer's prices A local pawn shop has a large ad in the paper. He says he pays the highest prices. (cough) Here is what he is giving for 1964 and older silver: Dime 60 cents Quarter $1.50 Half $3.00 Silver Dollars in XF $8.00 each Well cripes I can beat those prices. For months now I have been thinking of placing a similar ad in the same paper. Currently there are three buyers in there. One buys rolls of wheat cents for $1.25
Still the same question Bruce. Which would you rather have, silver coins or trying to complete your 7070 set? Keep in mind I'm not pushing you one way or the other. Just bringing it down to the lowest common denominator. This or that? So simple it's confusing. Michael
www.apmex.com today is paying $4.40 for each 90% Kennedy Half and $1.60 for each 40% Kennedy Half. I realize that boxing up your coins and shipping them to Apmex will increase your cost, but surely there's another dealer near you that can offer you a better deal.
I have about 40-50 or so of the 40% kennedy halves kicking around. I have no use for them and they are just taking up space but it would kill me to sell now when i think silver is going to be much higher in a few years.
