OK, I will ask. What makes you say that one is not been struck through grease? Everything outside the center appears to be quite well struck.
And practically flawless fields, it sure hasn't seen much, if any, circulation. An odd specimen to say the least....very neat!
Strike through grease was my first thought...but it's all clumped in the center...odd. Could be a weak flow...especially considering the odd Obverse flow lines. It will be interested to follow the discussion...
I don't think it's grease. The weakness is in the typical areas that have strike issues on these coins... Center obverse and center reverse.
I have everything packed up or I would post some weak strike Walkers. It would be interesting to see other "known weak strikes" in this thread...to compare.
I was going to say , it looks like a struck through , or grease . I doubt if they let the dies get that bad , unless they were adjusting the distance or pressure of the dies . Still one cool coin Matt .
VF-Details, Whizzed ... kidding. But that is one flat Walker, but I do not believe it caused by grease in the chamber.
as a long time Walker collector I figured from the thread title it would be a 40S. they are the most known for very weak strikes. must have been an issue with the coin press in SF.
Never seen one that weak either, and no I do not think it was struck through grease, grease strikes have a different look. But an interesting coin, and one worth saving pictures of for those who wish to compare & learn for future reference. The coin has a lot going on, die polish lines, hairlines, flow lines, planchet marks, contact marks, light wear, toning remnants, and what looks to have been lacquer that was later removed.
Have you been to the eye doc lately? You missed the fingerprint. To the OP, have you weighed it for the possibility of an undersize planchet?
1940-S WL's are noted for their weak strikes. Ask Bill Fivaz about them. But your coin is exceptionally weak. 1941 has the same problem and is only slightly better than the ones from 1940. Of course my birth year just happened to be 1941. I had to search for quite a while to find a good WL for my birth year set.
Weak struck 1940's Walking Liberty are comma. I have several with great mint luster from 1940-1945 (mostly Ds). I'm afraid it distracts from their value. Agreed?
This is a great coin for..."Guess the Grade". I'll start things off by guessing MS61. Now all we need to do is convince LostDutchman to send it in!
