Hello Gals & Gents! Can someone tell me where in the VF range you would put this coin? Any and all help would be super appreciated :thumb::yes:
Looks to be authentic to me. MM is position #2, I believe. See http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21328&highlight=1914-d. I will go with the VF (30), but I will bet it has been cleaned. That would go $200 - $250.
What would you say if it hasn't been cleaned in terms of value? The hue and color is darker in natural light as the camera seems to have unnaturally brightened it.
I get the appearance of a coin that was dipped ( some type and conc. of acid ) and the coin went too orange-pink and was darkened with Deller's Darkener solution to it current muddy color.
That's interesting, I'll have to post another pic when I get back in town Monday as the coin isn't nearly this hue in natural light. What cues are looked for to determine some sort of acidic clean?
Yes. I should have added that photo lighting can play games too. Most acidic cleanings would give the copper a matte/flat finish.
Btw racinghy, the spacing on the date is correct, someone posted a well massaged 1944d a few months ago, the date appeared as 19 14, rather than 1914 like this coin.
Ok, here is a picture of the coin next to a new 2013 Lincoln cent for comparison! More thoughts? Also, just wanted to go ahead and say thanks for the post so far. I've begun to learn a few interesting things and am glad that this community is here to help
Yes. Im pretty sure now it has been cleaned. Its too flat and the color is too bright for a coin that is 100 years old with that amount of wear to it. Still a very nice coin though.
Interesting turn of events... This coin was listed on eBay with a low reserve and described as never having been graded. Available as is. The coin sells for $285 and upon delivery the buyer freaks out claiming a multitude of crazy things: 1. The coin in person is brighter than pictured and that I must have either altered the picture or taken it in perfect light to make it appear darker.. (not true because to the naked eye it wasn't as bright as the picture came out) 2. The coin sent was not the one pictured (Uhhh, right.) and now the biggest claim...... 3. The coin is a fake! The buyer says he took it to a coin shop and that the coin "has an altered mint mark the d is to tall and narrow it has been obviously tooled and there is a depression around it which means it was added post mint." I apologize for his runon sentence and poor grammar. Now the buyer is threatening legal action and blah blah blah... I'll upload some more images if I still have them, but is any of what the buyer said about it being fake remotely possible? What a saga...
