Pretty Kool............ http://edition.cnn.com/2013/07/05/world/europe/uk-royal-baby-coin/?hpt=ieu_c2
Will it be legal tender? Should have announced this not now, but 9-10 months ago. Oh wait, I'm not British
Thing is, most of these coins will remain as family heirlooms. It's very possible that we won't be seeing any of these coins at auction anytime soon........
Don't know what's so special about being a royal heir anymore. That old queen 's gonna be around for another 50 years or so, it looks like. As it is now , there's so many heirs running around joly old England you can't swing a dead cat around by the tail without hittin' one of 'em.
After looking into this, the penny is apparently a regular "special" issue of the Mint, so you can buy them. It's just that if your kid was born on that day, I guess it's free.
According to the article (and other similar ones I've read) they only made 2,013 of them. Average daily births in the UK is 1,983. That doesn't leave many left over for purchase (Especially considering some VIP's will acquire pieces as well.) I liked this in the article Changes? Such as when? the 16th century? The last time the eldest female child was skipped was when Edward VI took the throne rather than his older sister Mary in 1547. When he died in 1553 then Mary became Queen, followed by Elizabeth I in 1558. If there have been changes in the rules of succession it would be changes to allow Charles to take the throne when Elizabeth dies. Edward VIII had to abdicate because he could not become King married to a divorced commoner. Charles is married to a divorced commoner.
