I love to find 1878 Morgans with the type C reverse. And its information that every Morgan collector should know about. They are always priced about the same as regular 78P Type A & B reverses. Everytime I find one and buy it, five times out of six so far it winds up being an R-6 or R-7 coin. The general Morgan collecting community seems to ignore them though as everyone wants just one example for their collection and I always pick them up in AU to MS up for a song. I love all 1878P's and find this type to be readily available at most shops that I go to and as mentioned the dealers dont pay attention to them, and only 1,500,000.00 were minted. Always a good deal and always a good find. The one I am working on now is a 1878P Type C Rev Proof Vam 215. I found it in a dealers shop for $125.00 Breen says 300 proofs were struck, but makes the comment mostly melted. Q. David Bowers says in the Whitman Red Book makes a 25 to 50 known to exist remark, if I am right about what I have, it is a major find. It matches all of the mint die features on both the Obv. & Rev. If Im right its worth so much Im not going to tell my wife about it. She thinks whats mine is hers by default. This blog was started with the intent of pointing out the relative rarity of the 78 Morgan Type C Rev. and letting everyone know to snap them up when they see anything above AU58, but it seems to be going in the direction of providing updates as to the further investigation of this one Vam and what to do with it. I am going to delete the attached photos and post the Vam 215. Well I cant seem to delete the Type C Rev"s I have already posted here. If you want to see the Vam 215 look in my albums its in there. Also please feel free to dispense any advice both as to what you think about this, and what I should do next. If Im right its too valuable to do anything but a walk through of a TPG.
