Been thinking about something and what the heck I will go ahead and ask it.
The best way I know to do this is to give an example.

say I have anniversary Silver eagle set and I send it to one of the two main TPG. Now of course everyone want the 70 grade but generally 69 is acceptable. If these coins do not come up to this grade, can i request that these coins not be graded and returned in there orginal state.

My question really is if this is done, which i feel it is, and the the grading companies never certified or grade these then i would assume it would not come out in there grading and certification census. I would have to question how reliable this report is if this is the case

I may be way off on this and that is why I am asking those far more experienced than I

Yes, you can request a minimum grade and if the coin does not meet that grade, they will ship it back ungraded. And no, it will not show up in the census.

Thank you becky . that answers a question for me . If you look an NGC grading reports and see some of the sets or coins grading a 70 between at between 10-40% of the time and then you read that only 3% of the entire series is grading that. then this would explain it. It would seem that that these recent sets , have been super cherry picked. gold and silver anniversary sets comes to mind

Lesson to be learned . Never buy raw sets outside of the mint becouse the chances are they have been cherry picked and the chances are that you may be left with a coin that will never receive a high grade if certified . that is if that is you thing

no wonder so many do not care about certified coins. I will go now and watch the rest of the monster movie. thanks again

    bama:
That is one reason that TPG is going (in my opinion) to go downhill.
The ridiculous prices that dealers are asking for "grade rarities" will eventually cause the hobby to implode.
I believe in coin collecting, so don't get me wrong.
But is a 1909 Lincoln cent in MS 67 red worth more than a 1901 S Barber Quarter? (I am only using that as an example, I don't really know the prices for that stuff.)
I have a friend who bought a 1927 (?) Lincoln cent in PCGS MS-67 Red for $3,000! (or thereabouts)
Heck, with that same money he could have gotten a nice '09S VDB in Unc! and a nice grade at that!
I believe in TPG's for authenticating coins, but not for these ridiculous coins, like an MS-69 or MS 70 1959 Lincoln cent that would probably sell for $30,000.
