World Coins: Your Newest Acquisition!

Just bought this one, cut coinage circulated in Peru end 19th century. Seller pictures.

The SA 1964 proof 2.5 cent. This coins is small 16mm diameter. I took out my old light setup and 100 mm macro and tried to capture the tone. What do think?

 

Finaly got the Australia 1984 first year issue proof.

 

Got this one as gift last week. SA mint 2006 proof R2 with 250 mintage.

1846A German States Hannover 2 Pfennige



23.25mm; 4.6gm; smooth edge.

This just arrived in my mailbox.

I've gotten quite a few coins, mostly European, from this fellow...you've seen many of 'em recently.

I especially like the almost stark simplicity here, broken appropriately by the Royal chop.

Nicely balanced, don't you think?

Can anybody add meaning to that octopus-like mufti-stroke monogram?

And: Why the prominence given to the mint-mark?

He graded this XF...I agree.

 

The size and position of the mintmark look normal to me. On other coins, especially nowadays, it is usually smaller but ... nah, fine. Here is one that is three years older than yours, with an ornate "2", but the MM is about as big.

The octopus is an "EAR". At that time, Ernst August I was king of Hannover, thus "Ernestus Augustus Rex". As for the mintmark, the kingdom of Hannover had a mint in, well, the city of Hannover, but I suppose they used mints in other countries (A would be Berlin, I suppose) as well.

That's beautiful...rimless I note; the ornate two is much finer, as is the EAR

The Crown also looks simpler...not as busy. Really sweet!

My comment about the mint-mark had more to do, as you surmised, with relative size when compared to modern examples. I don't have a clue how many mints were working then, but it seems somehow unusual that it was more important then than now to blaze the coin so prominently. Different times...

33mm; 16.6gm; Edge inscribed "GOTT MIT UNS" with (oak?) leaves flanking Iron Cross X 3.

A particularly sweet fistful of silver, and quite clean. Crummy obverse focus, tho'...

And that Majestic Eagle...Oh!

 

1943 Republic of Portugal 2 1/2 Escudos



~20.5mm; 3.6gm; reeded edge.

Looks like 'our' dollar sign beneath the shield.

When did that symbol begin to be used...and where?

And: what is the hooped arrangement behind the shield? What does it symbolize? Why obscured by the shield?

This look AU...(I hope)?

30.08 to 30.22mm (oval?); 12.4gm; reeded edge.

Obverse & reverse field and image (*) have a decidedly granular appearance...really dirty dies?

Opinions about whether genuine?

Either uniformly toned or an odd alloy...

1947 Kingdom of Sweden Gustaf V, 2 Kronor



30.9mm; 14gm; reeded edge.

Good in the hand, and not beat-up.

Very bright, white and clean.

One of the latest in my recent hauls...I'm older than the coin.

 

1893 Kingdom of Spain Alfonso XIII 5 Pesetas



~37.5mm; 24.9gr; relief edge, 3 panels of 9 stubby crosses, 27 total.

I saved the best for last. This is a Boy King in the seventh year of his reign.

Really satisfying to handle for it's heft and size. I'll refrain from carrying it, though.

Nice. Yours is the 'L' (reverse, above dot of abbreviated 'Const.' ) and a strong XF

 

Nice coins! The Peru 1/2 had little die rotation thus worn die rather than dirty I believe.

 

I have one like this, it looks weird cause it doesnt have as much silver in it as the earlier ones did. The earlier ones are a bit pricey.
