Hi all.. I was looking at some 1997 cents I have and noticed the ear was different on this one. I'm hoping I finally found a real error coi ear1.jpg ear2.jpg ear3.jpg n?

I believe you in that it may not be the same as the one I've seen on the web. but if you look at the pic I am posting now you will see the difference. Here is another 1997 cent that I own. Compare the two ears and to me it distinctly shows a shadow earlobe on my earlier post?. Unless the one I am posting now is an error coin?

I think the first coin you posted might have a slight plating disturbance, but I do not think it is either a listed doubled die or a new one.

Are you using the USB "microscope" to examine or just for imaging? While really a poor tool for both, it is especially worthless for examining coins; at the right (wrong) angle, anything can vaguely appear to be a variety.

In post #4 go take a good look at the coin in the link that Jello added for you and remember what the 97 doubled ear looks like then if you happen to find one there will be no doubt about what you have. every 97 doubled ear was made with the same die and they are all exactly alike. I have personally only found 1 in a lifetime of roll searching but there may still be some out there in other folks areas. the coins with damage on Lincoln's ear is tricking a few new collectors and causing them to think they found the real doubled ear, I see the damaged ear coins on Ebay every now and then.

I combined both your pics, the one you claimed to be the doubled ear and the one you said was normal. After resizing to get the ears the same size approximately you can see there's really no difference in the shape and size of the earlobe.

Well I guess I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other... LOL Sorry to waste your time. Yes I have a "digital microscope" and the glare is really bad. It has 6 white LED's which are either to bright or dark. What is an inexpensive camera available today that can do the close in shots really well? I see some advertised as having greater optical zoom and macro modes of differing focus lengths etc.. I'm sure if I chose to buy one it won't work. Any recommendations are appreciated.

your photos are good enough for someone to be able to see what you have. it looks like all you need is to practice with the lighting issue and find which light works the best . also you can add color to them during editing.
