A coin of the Latin Empire at Constantinople

This is the coin I referred to in another thread, and a purchase off my beaten path. Yeah it nearly has nothing left on the reverse but the obverse has plenty of detail remaining and I got it for what I think was cheap ($13). I don't know anything beyond the basic info (attribution is from the dealer) so any other info on my coin and/or this series in general is appreciated. But one thing I do know is that, while Latin Imperial coins follow nearly the same style as their Byzantine predecessors, Jesus (at least on this type) has clear Western Medieval features.

The Latin Empire was established by the Western European forces of the Fourth Crusade after their conquest of Constantinople from the Byzantines (Eastern Romans) in 1204. It lasted until 1261 when the Byzantine Empire of Nicaea retook the city.

Interesting history. I don't know anything about these coins, but the detail on the obverse is pretty good I would think for this time period.

These strike me as the sort of thing you pick up whenever you see a good looking one because so many are just awful. I have no idea how to ID them beyond 'Latin'.

There are some attempts to classify these, but most I have read have not been terribly successful. Therefor most people just classify as "Latin kingdom", which by itself can be a good id, since many of these are horrible condition. This one is exceptionally nice. I do not think I own one as nice.

I guess we all have been dealing with the Byzantine fever. I almost bought one of these of the Latin Empire, and I still might, I opted for one of the restored Byzantine Empire. Now I have to get one of those super late silver coins. I already have 2 Byzantine Silvers, 7th and 9th centuries! Yea!

Thanks guys! Yeah Anoob, I think I also have a bit of Byzy fever! What I really want to get into are the early issues and I especially want a nice example of one of those big Justinian facing folles.

    Steve...

    Justin I isn't the same as Justinian I ;)

The Justin has counterstamps and the Justinian doesn't.
