I've decided to start a 12 Emperors collection. I just bought my first coin. I know the members on this forum must have some great examples of 12 Emperor coinage. I think it would be nice to see some. Please post them! I'd also ask for your insights on collecting the 12 including opinions on which of the 12 are the most difficult to find, the most pricey, the most plentiful, the most artistic etc. Is it kosher to mix Imperial with Provincial? This Augustus I just picked up is a provincial if I'm not mistaken in my attribution: Augustus AE As of Ephesus, Ionia, ca 25 BC. 26mm/3.4 OBV: CAESAR, bare head right / REV: AVGVSTVS, legend within wreath. RPC 2235; RIC 486; Hunter 290; Cohen 34.
Augustus AE-Dupondius, Nemausus 27 BC - 14 AD circa 10 AD Weight: 12.8 grams Diameter: 27 mm (my estimate => I’ll need to verify this) Obverse: Laureate Augustus and Agrippa heads back to back, IMP DIVI FPP (Heads of Agrippa (left) and Augustus (right) back to back) Reverse: Crocodile chained to palm tree COL NEM Reference: S-1731 Other: Fine Interestingly, the captive crocodile is still used on the coat of arms of Nimes (formerly Nemausus)
TIBERIUS AE As Tiberius – Caesar 8-14 AD Tiberius – Augustus 14-37 AD Clunia, Spain Diameter: 28 MM Weight: 13.9 GRAMS Obverse: TI CAESAR AVG F AVGVSTVS IMP, laureate head right, countermark of bull rushing right on Tiberius' neck Reverse: L IVL RVF T CALD CON T POMP LON P IVL NEP IIII VIR, Bull facing left, CLVNIA above, countermark of eagle's head on bull Other: AB-839 … RPC-456
Caligula As 1st Century AD (Ruled 37-42 AD) Diameter: 27 mm Weight: 11.3 grams Obverse: Gaius' head left Reverse: Vesta seated with SC below Other: nice green patina
Nero AE As 65 AD Diameter: 28.4 mm Weight: 11.3 grams Obverse: NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P - Bare head of Nero, globe at point of bust Reverse: S-C, Victory advancing left, holding shield inscribed S P Q R Reference: RIC 477
I have a complete set of denarii of the First 12, but it took me many years to assemble. The last four were the hardest and most expensive in this order: Otho, Claudius, Julius Caesar, and Caligula. I also have multiple coins, both Imperial and Provincial and silver and bronze of most of the 12. If this comes out too small, I may have to post each separately.
Vespasian AR-Denarius (69-79 AD) - Rome 76 AD Weight: 3.4 grams Obverse: Laureate head right, IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG Reverse: eagle standing facing on garlanded base, hd. l., COS VIII Reference: S-2287 Other: Good Fine with full legends
Domitian AR Denarius 88 AD Diameter: 19.2 mm Weight: 3.2 grams Obverse: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VII - Laureate head right Reverse: IMP XIIII COS XIIII CENS P P P - Minerva standing left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre, shield at feet Reference: RIC 109
Great coins guys/gals. I think I'm going to start with bronze coins, then maybe move on to Denarii. It should take some time to put together the full set of 24. In the meantime, it's fun to see coins others have collected. Thanks for posting and sharing them!!
=> Nicely played, ya ol' cagey vet!! (so far in my ancient journey, I only have these scraggly, random examples)
I certainly would not call them "scraggly". You have some beautiful examples (as always, you young bi-guy). BTW, does your wife know?
ahaha, good one ... Bing => I am deleting this joke (just in case, ya know?) ... I'm glad you thought it was funny
You can find them in my sig in my gallery. Dont wanna post 9 of the 12. Need 3 more but their taking a back seat due to cost and mainly wanting to finish other areas first.
Mat: I looked on your Forum albums. Nice coins, but the one that really stuck out to me is the Orbiana. And the portrait of Galba is fantastic.
Thanks & Orbiana was my most expensive but was a good deal when compared to other examples. The relief on it is pretty high too. Galba cost me a few porous roman tetradrachms and $60. Ohto, Vitellius, & Caligula are the ones I need. I could settle on a vitellius I know of in my range but I dont like it. Caligula I want a non VESTA example and they can be found somewhat easily, Otho....he just hurts wallets
