There has been some recent interest in the little know civilizations of Antiquity and the middle ages, this has caused me to resume the hunt for interesting coins that most quickly overlook. I was able to get this for a very reasonable price. I found this coin similar to the Saurashtra and Gujarat issues mentioned in a few recent threads. This one is rare as it does not have the traditional Zoroastrian fire altar, this has a soldier on horse back spearing 2 falling enemies. This particular coin is struck in fine silver and maintains a nice full 4 gram weight. I find the reverse irresistible and something I don't often see on ancient Central Asian and Indian Coins. It actually reminds me of a certain LRB reverse type, right? Check it out... Western India Siharas of Khankan (1000-1200 AD) Anonymous AR Drachm 14 mm x 4.19 g Obverse: Stylized Sassanian Bust right. "Sri" in Brahmi behind head left field. Reverse: Stylized Horseman spearing two falling enemies. Sun in upper right field. ref: Mit. NIS 651v Note: Fine Silver, Very Rare.
Not my area at all, but it's an interesting coin and with these coins I like trying to find the designs among the lines and dots whenever they get presented to me. My brother has an ancient Indian coin and it took me forever to find the horseman on the reverse lol (still haven't found the bull on the obverse...)
Yes! That's the one! On yours the horse guy is way clearer but the bull... I'm guessing that's its eye in the middle, maybe... lol
Ummm... just kidding I knew that Really though, thanks for pointing it out. Hopefully I'll see it now on my bro's coin lol
I was never very good at seeing images in clouds. This is no better. I guess I have no imagination so I accept your wisdom in this.
Finding a specimen of the Sihara with horseman and both falling enemies is no easy task. Neither of mine qualify.
ahahaha, that's very clever (and quite true) ... initially I did not see any "pattern/image", but after a few examples I can now see it pretty clearly (interesting coins, gang!!) :thumb::thumb::thumb:
