The Rand is the official currency of South Africa.
Some other african countries also use the Rand.

Rand's name derives from the word "Witwatersrand" which is an abbreviation of "White-waters-ridge".
This is the mountain on which the city of Johannesburg was built.
In the past it was a major deposit of gold extraction.

In 1964, I ordered some uncirculated coins from the South Africa Mint.

The mint offered some gold Rand coins but at that time I could not afford
the gold coins or proof sets.

Also Americans could not own gold coins dated after 1932 then.

I always wanted one of the Rand coins, and sometime later I bought one from a dealer.
