I don't intend for this to go negative. Yet, when watching something on TV, I switch to coin shows for entertainment and to fill commercial time on the other station. I enjoy Robert Chambers and second, Mike Mezak. Some knowledge is gained and they're so passionate about their products.
I don't like any of them either, they know about coins yet are selling them as good investments despite knowing they are charging huge markups.
Unfortunately they use thier coin knowledge to scam unsuspecting people who are impulse buyers, and old people that think they are making an investment. I enjoy thier stories and sales pitches but will buy ASE's graded by Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles before I send them my hard earned money.
I don't even watch TV, so I don't get to see coin TV. I understand they charge pretty high prices for whatever they sell. Is that true?
I used to like Paul Hollis when he was on the Coin Vault but Chambers used to over talk him with all of his bluster.
I like the Gold Vault ones...with the guards in the background wheeling around pallets of gold in front of an open vault. They look like the guys on Star Trek that would get kill in the first 15 minutes of the show.
In my opinion they are all not good. They routinely twist truths in an attempt to build value that does not exist. Some are certainly better then others but I have never seen a numismatic item sell on tv where you would have any hope of ever seeing a return on the investment. Also most of those items can be had for much, much less on ebay.
Yeah, and a lot of those items can be found either more expensive through "certain magazines", and much cheaper at dealers. I view it all as a continuum, just like all other products. I know where to get good prices on coins, so I benefit from this knowledge. I do not know where to buy oak boards cheap, (but my dad does), so I pay for this lack of knowledge while he benefits. Every single day you buy an item that someone else knows where to buy it cheaper, while others pay more than you do. It happens with every product, every day. Coins are no different. This is why I do not begrudge any dealer their markup. Those who have come to Cointalk have simply become better shoppers and know that TV shows are a high cost source of obtaining coins. But, same is true of most stuff being sold on HSN and QVC, and I do not see anyone up in arms about their overpriced jewelry and consumer goods. Trust me, everything sold by those entities can be purchased cheaper elsewhere. People pay a price for convenience.
These guys are all scammers - out right lies and half truths to support their contention that a coin is a good investment at their inflated prices.
Sometimes I watch these shows for entertainment . Have to say old Chambers is my favorite. You can not take them seriously or at least I don't. Kind of like wrestling
I think the difference is that some people consider coins an investment, (or at least expect to get a reasonable amount of their money back if they go to sell). Whereas with jewelry or consumer goods everyone should know that it isn't an investment. (obviously tv is still a terrible place to buy those items as they have to have a larger markup to pay for their higher expenses) It amazes me that anyone would buy anything off of these shows, but I think they primarily rely on preying on the senile and compulsive shoppers.
No the other shop at home junk is overpriced for sure. But since this is a coin forum there was not reason to bring that up. Generally anything bought from TV or from a salesman that comes out to your home is going to be way overpriced. Your best bet before buying anything would be to do the research and find out what a fair market value is. Then try to buy it for less
