Hello! I'm new to this site. I've come across a couple old Canadian nickels: 1928 and 1932 Georgivs V. I've also found a couple strange looking Canadian pennies. One type is a 1943 copper Georgivs VI that has squared (12 sided) edges. There is a large torch in a "V" on the back: centered between the date. "CANADA" is on top and "CENTS" on the bottom with 2 maple leafs: one on each side. The other is a 1945 penny with the same look, but a bright silver color: bluish in hue. (I have several of each.) I have never seen such before. Are they from Newfoundland or something? Anyone know what either of the coins might be worth? [The nickels I've seen, but I haven't found anything like these pennies before: not even on the web.] Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.
The 1943 is a 5 cent coin made of a brass alloy caled tombac used to conserve nickel for the war effort. The "V" served two purposes, it was the sign for victory and also the Roman symbol for the number 5.If you look closely around the rim on the reverse you will see spelled out in morse code the words "We Win When We Work Willingly" The 1945 coin is the same design in chromium plated steel. They are worth only a couple of dolllars in EF - AU condition. The 28 nickel VF-20 $5.00,EF-40 $15.00 The 31 nickel VF-20 $6.00,EF-40 $20.00 Values are $CDN.
Thanks for the info! I appreciate the quick response and the information. The "morse code" is barely visible on each of the war coins, but it's there. I'll have to scan it at 1600 optical to get a better look. I don't have many coins: a few canadian pennies sets: 1940 to present. I used to have about six EC 1914D Lincoln pennies, but my dad accidentally spent them. [I had them laying on a counter near the kitchen sink when I still lived at home.] Never found out what they were worth: if anything. Do you know? [Just curious.] Thanx again!
Your Daddy spent six 1914-D cents at face value? I'm gonna do you a favor, and not tell you what they were worth.
That bad, huh, jody526? Bummer! Dockwalliper, that photo of yours is exactly the coins I have. Thanx.
I don't know if you want to look but(http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39456&item=3927067710&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)
You have to be kidding, 9roswell! And that coin is nowhere near the worst one of the six I had. Don't know the gradings yet, but if that one is considered good quality, mine would have been EC. Oh well, stuff happens. I should have kept them in a safe spot. Easy, but sad, mistake. Thanx for the info.
Incidentally, bromac, what kind of coin is that you have showing: silver with green leaves? I've never even heard of one like that. Must be rare.
It is a one oz. silver bullion coin with a $5.00 face value. One of a series started in 2001 featuring coloured leaf designs. They have an issue price of $35.00. That one is the 2002.They are not hard to find.
