    Since I have been seeing a bunch of ancient coins coming in the shop from random places lately. I thought it might be fun to start a thread to see just exactly what kind of ancients walk into a typical... or not so typical coin shop. Enjoy!

    These walked in today 6/22 mixed in a loose bag of mediocre world coins.

    Wish I had a shop nearby that sold ancient coins :( If you were selling those and I wasn't broke for coin money I would so buy a couple off you.

    This might be a place to ask if there is a place for local shops in the ancient business. These are, to use Ripley's term, OK coins. No full service ancient dealer would be interested in buying them except as a favor or to encourage you to bring in the rest of grandpa's collection. I walk in and out of shops whenever I can and seeing a dish on the counter with these coins might make me stop in again just because it shows that the shop owner recognizes that there were coins before Lincoln cents.

    Of course I find it interesting that these walk into an Indianapolis shop. In the 60's, I used to love to get a chance to go to Indianapolis and visit 3-4 stores downtown (all at least one flight up in older buildings) that sold ancients. I was from New Castle and there even was a shop there that had a few ancients but nothing nicer than these. Today I know there are ancients in Anderson but wonder how many other places there are and what treasures lie hidden there. What happened to all the coins sold by those old dealers back when coin shops were expected to sell ancients and no one had a sign 'We Buy Gold' in the window?

    Sadly the guy in Anderson no longer runs that shop... So I'm not sure if there are any there anymore or not.

    They are not all going to be amazing pieces... Some of them may be... But I thought it would be fun to see what's floating around out there.

    I'm kind of lucky. My local shop always has ancients. It can be hard to pass up a coin when you have it in you hand, vs online.

    I like all of those coins. Please post any more that happen to walk into your store! If these walked into my house they would walk their way straight into a flip pretty quick.

    Shame about the condition but this was sitting on my desk after my day off. Antonia Dupondius.

    Fun thread Matt. I think there will be more of this in the future. I find Ebay and the internet was more widely dispersed ancients, since many more people know they can be bought cheaply than before.

    I found at least a couple of them pretty interesting myself. :)

    I'm sure all here would like to know how to attract such things to walk in and perch on our desks. I understand how an ocassional bag full of grandpa's coins could come to a storefront that says 'Coins' but I am a bit surprised that a single Antonia would be owned by someone who would drop it off (I assume to an employee in your absence?). Condition is lacking but the die work on this coin is excellent - especially on the standing Claudius reverse. Many coins of this period have metal erosion problems and they circulated long enough that many are more worn than yours. Condition certainly makes it not worth a lot but it is an interesting visitor just to drop in.

    Mine is worn but has less corrosion. It was $34 in 1987 but probably worth more today since so many big spenders have joined the hobby in the last 26 years.

    Here is a little lot of better stuff that came in today. Below is the common stuff that was in the lot.

    quick-math => ($47-$34) = $13!!!!

    ($13/$34) = 38% Return on Investment!!! (out-standing)
