Alright, so we recently went though quite a bit of money from our local banks looking for errors and star notes. After searching many many bills, I came across 3- $1 Star Notes, and 1 $5 star note. My question is how rare are the star notes to find in circulation? Second question, we just placed an order though our bank for $1,000 brand new $1 Bills and a few hundred in $5 Bills. What are the chances brand new bills will contain errors and/or star notes? Anyone have any experience?
it's really all a matter of luck. i worked at a bank for many years and came across a lot of stars. newer star notes are not that hard to find. as far as value it really depends on the year/reserve and condition of course. errors are a lot harder to come by. you can look for interesting serial numbers as well.
Yea we found one serial number we kept today. A $20 with the serial 00005585. Never seen a bill with that many 0s with the new technology scanning bills before they leave the BEP are there still chances to find errors? If I have $1,000 worth of $1s will there be a possible star note or do star notes go out in their own batches?
brand new star notes are in straps of $100 usually. it's very rare to find those straps at banks. they used to be put randomly in straps. you should find at least a couple maybe 5-10 star notes in $1000 singles. maybe more if you get lucky.
The new $100s will likely flood the market with star notes and errors. Even though they spent years pulling errors by hand, I know many must have been missed.
I asked about the new $100 bills, she said she'd place an order for some $100s but didn't know if they'd be the new ones or not.
The star notes are printed first, so that they can be inserted during production process, only about less than 1/2% are printed for any series. Next, if the notes exceed the numbering system, then there will be more of the stars, but usually this doesn't happen. I have run into a run of them at my bank when new, and got many several times in the past. Now that I am retired, I do not go as often. Low low numbers of any series below 1000, and a star in a very rear find, and even more rear if found in CU condition.
