    Hi,
I'm New collector i started like 3 month ago, i have small collection of coins from banks rolls and some proof mint set but not value, i have set of 1961, 1963 and 1957 silver proof coins .. and i own Garrett 250 metal detector i never use it before, still new in the box, i think my small experience hunting the rolls it's hard ... do you think hunting using metal detector is better?

I personally have found more silver and neat things detecting then roll searching. But i think it depends on where you live for which might be more lucrative.

Flip a coin to get the answer. I metal detect often, and it really depends where you detect. Is the area old, were there a lot of people there at some point? Roll searching is pure luck of the draw. You can increase your silver finds with metal detecting if you take the time research old maps and get the history of a place etc. I'd much rather be outside than sitting on my couch opening rolls of coins.

Where did they give you a permit to detect? How did you go about getting it?

Location, location, location... I live in the Pacific Northwest. My town is only about 100 years old, so there are some possible finds out there. I have not purchased a metal detector yet, but I'm considering it. I found a few old home sites to possibly search, so until then I'll just search coin rolls. People in my area don't appear to have as much luck metal detecting for old coins like they do further south or east of the Pacific Northwest (so I'm not chomping at the bit to go out and buy a nice metal detecting setup). So... if where you live has a lot of history and you know where people used to get together then metal detect for sure. On another note, I found an old home site where the house is all gone and the only thing left standing are the metal posts for an old clothesline. I think that might be a good place to search cause I'll bet people lost coins from their clothes by hanging them on the line.
