Fill the dies with 200,000 more strikes, especially in the tail of that three, creating thinner numbers and then that tail will point down.
As in 1983, when they were all worn like that. Right here on CT we have a recent example or you can all go search your 83's. http://www.cointalk.com/t229569/ Is it easier to believe that a whole bunch of coins, coincidentally mostly only S MM eroded just that way, or that those dies just happen to erode just that way, or that at some point the other 3 was used? Can we at least agree that the 83 has a SW tail?
If you take a closer look at the 2 images in my post; you should notice not only are they of the same coin but also the same image. Well except in the 1st image I copied a piece of the field over the tail of the 3. Emulating what would be produced if a device (in this case the 3) was damaged/sheared/buffed off/etc on a Working HUB. If this working HUB remained in service it would produce several working dies that exhibited this sheared 3 trait.
You mean there actually aren't two different varieties of 3 for the date? Finally, someone clearly explains it to me!
Take a stand? Actually, not to put too fine a point on it ... what is your take on it? Do you deny that the SW tail was minted on 1943 cents or non?
I really hate to do this, as I have been hoping it would die ( pun). But a problem I have with Justafarmer's good idea, is that once a working hub was produced for use, it will be the harder of the 2 dies, since the working die being pressed off of the hub would be heat softened for the pressing. So I have a hard time seeing a reworking of the hub die, although it could occur. I do not think there was a design change in the middle of the year, so any presence of 2 "visually" different '3' would be by damage of some sort ( I suspect a working die ), and of little value. IMO.
I fully agree they are not all identical. I first noticed this almost 40 years ago and just shrugged it off. My presumption is different dies had minor differences.
Seems the varieties are alive and well, according to the photos by our member redwin on his ebay listings.
A little off topic but given the new CoinTalk format, I've yet to get one of these links to work! Is there something special that needs to happen?
I think the top guy said he was working of fixing the redirect thing in his announcement thread, just like links from google not working, I wonder if you searched for that tread number in this forum if it would get you there as a work around>
