Hello, I'm new to this forum so bear with me.
I'm not a coin collector however, my grandmother was and when I was a kid I remember her talking about coins that were stamped incorrectly and what not.
The other day I came across a 1999 state quarter (Connecticut) with some type of deformity stamped into it.
I was hoping somebody could give me some information about what I have here.
The pic is pretty bad so I'm sorry if I show too much or too little but any info will be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  3. Hey timmy951,

Welcome to Coin Talk. :hail: It looks like this could be what is called, at least around here, a glue job. A clear resin or epoxy is applied to the coin, usually then stamped with another like coin. This gives the effect of a double stuck coin.

However there is a possibility that this coin is a strike through. Meaning something was on the planchet, blank coin, before it was struck. The only problem I see with this is there are no marks on Washington. Can you take a few more pics? If possible show the back of the coin as well.

    Thanks,

    Michael

    ok thanks for the info.
i will attach another pic shortly.
actually there is a mark on washington, it just depends on the angle and the lighting but i will try to get a shot showing that and you can definately feel the marking on him.
i will also attach a pic of the other side, however, it appears to be normal as far as i can tell.

ok sorry for the delay but here are the pics that you asked for.
    hopefully they are satisfactory.
i had to angle the first shot quite a bit so you can see the pattern on washington, and the reverse side should be ok.
let me know what you think.
    thank you.

The patterns indicate that the Quarter was glued to something and the glue is still stuck to it! Can you tell if the wavy patterns and the solid pattern extending from UNITED around the outer perimeter to the "R" in DOLLAR is glue or actually part of the coin?

  7. Man from that angle it looks like the ripples are pressed into the coin. Does that look right to anyone? Look at the word UNITED. It appears that it is raised above the ripples.

I like errors timmy951, but I'm still learning. My vote is some sort of strike through. Maybe some cloth or something? However, I would feel more comfortable hearing from Mike or Bill on this one.

If you want to do a simple test try dipping it in acetone. It won't hurt the coin but will remove glue.

    Michael:
Great answer, the acetone will remove the glue and it may solve the mystery. I vote for a glue job, but without seeing the piece it is difficult to say.
