Picked up a few coins for my 7070. Will post pics tomorrow. I have decided that whenever possible I want to use silver coins in the modern slots. So there will be a lot of silver proofs in the book.

For Morgans the 1880-s, 1881-s, and the 1882-s are all relatively easy to find in high grade. For Peace Dollars though, the highest grade that will not empty the bank would be that of a MS64, which can be found easily among the many earlier dates of the series. A wish you well with your 7070 album:thumb:.

    Thanks Mike,
In addition to the Silver Proof Bicentennial set that I have in my 7070, the next two coins are as follows:

Personally I like the look of the silver proof coins over ther standard clad issues (my opinion), so as I mentioned I'll probably be hunting for high grade examples of these to go in the "Clad Slots". I might even get creative and rework the album labels to reflect that the coins are in fack silver.
I also have a couple of coins in 2x2s that I plan on using in this album I just have to find them. I believe I have several raw proof nickels to fill the modern slot, and a wide fariety of Lincoln Cents to choose from in BU-Red condition.

For those of you that have cracked out coins for your 7070, did you keep the TPG labels? I know someone made a special page for thier 7070 to display the lables (Cracker's Remorse thread?). Thanks guys!

No, as I mentioned earlier I got it from another collector on this website for a fair price. I have heard of people finding them at their LCS, but I haven't seen any around here.

Superc, if you are stating that you can find them at Books-A-Million, then i would be very interested in what they are selling a 7070 for in their store.

Noted. I haven't been in a BAM since January, but on my next return I will check. They had a lot of folders for sale. Not my thing, and my spouse left me 30 or so different kinds of folders only half or less filled, so I wasn't looking at folders that day, but will try to remember.

I think you paid a nice price. It looks great! I'm still looking for a 3 cent piece of my own.

I think it's a great idea to start a type-collection, but there's a certain risk in making bad deals just in order to complete the collection. E.g. single rare coin is missing: OMG I must have it right now... But I guess that can happen anyways...

You've caught on to my strategy! Lol

Definitely not what I an shooting for. This is a long term project based on finding good deals. It also gave me a place to store some of the raw type coins I have already collected.

Well, you succeeded. This thread inspired me to start one. I already started a high grade virtual 7070 TPG set, but the idea of collecting cheaper lower grade coins sounds fun. Seeing circulated wheat pennies and buffalo nickels and Barber quarters brings back feelings from when I collected as a kid, when price and grade weren't important. There's something fun about collecting without the anxiety of condition. Takes me back to the passion that started it all. I'll still collect my higher grade sets too, but I'm excited about adding this fun side project. I think I'll take the strategy of waiting for great deals, too.

Now, need to find a 7070 album.

Out of my album collections (over 45 albums) my favorite is the type set albums I have one dansco 7070 and two Intercept Shield Albums that are U.S. Type Sets (see YouTube richcali21 U.S. Type Set part one) for my first year U.S. Type Set with most in high grades I am still updating but my main book is full and I have cracked quite a few out of holders for this album. I am now trying to start a complete proof U.S. Type Set talk about long term collecting.... but it will be worth it, I saw one on here and it was the most wonderful type set I have ever seen!!! Just remember if your serious about this album then buy the best coins that you can buy because you will only end up upgrading the whole album once your done filling it like I did. I am also starting a complete graded type set as well.

I have a type set (minus about a dozen coins).
But I didn't use the 7070 as my basis.
I used the NGC Registry to define my type set.

So that's really the first consideration (after deciding to do a type set).
What are you going to use as your "definition"?
Actually I first used the Red Book and found it was reasonably close to the NGC set.
The NGC set showed me that I had missed a few
    BUT
the Red Book showed me that IMO the NGC set was lacking one coin.
Anyway, decide what your set is to contain. i.e., what you will consider complete.

Step 2 is to decide what your minimum acceptable grade will be.
I wanted coins that were a high enough grade to show what the Mint's intent was.
Therefore I decided on XF or better.

Step 3 is to decide what's the most you'll be willing to pay for a coin.
That value will probably allow you to get MS-67 Lincolns and Jeffersons, but not IHC's or Buffalos (that's where the min grade comes into play).

Step 4 might be to decide whether you will want slabbed coins or not, and, if so, from what TPG's.
But if you are using the 7070 then slabbed coins are not the way you'd go.

Step 5 would be other considerations.
In my case one was that I wanted ONLY business strikes.

So basically have a plan of what is acceptable for your type set.

And don't be surprised if your criteria, particularly Steps 2 and 3 change over time.
In my case I found either that:
-- I couldn't get XF or better for the max I was willing to pay so I had to drop to a lower grade (I have a half dozen or so VF's in my set now)
    OR
-- I had to raise the max I was willing to pay to get the coin I wanted.

Whatever, take your time and go for what you want.
Don't accept less unless you feel there's no alternative; sometimes there will be only a hole in your collection (until you hit the lottery ;) )

    Thanks for the advice.
I definitely feel like the album has a direction. I'm am going for the most detail possible in problem free coins that fall in a reasonable price range. I understand that this criteria may change from coin to coin. For example, the Silver State Quarter Proof that I'm using is a PF69 that I'm cracking out, but by no means will I be able to afford this coin grade in other coins. I know it may seem like I have jumped in with both feet, but the inital coins are relatively easy purchases (the last page of my album is now complete and ready to photograph). The 3 cent piece was really the first real type coin that I actively went out looking for and I feel like i got it for a price that I was comfortable with. I'm still working on easing into this set by purchasing what I know first (the 3 cent just happened to be a good deal in my book) so the moderns will all be fairly easy. Silver and proof coins where possible is another goal that I have, and if it is within reason cracking out a coin is not out of the question. At the same time, this will not be a top grade set (if i was going to do that, i would keep the coins in their slabs). Instead, I'm looking for a good, detailed example of each coin.
I know that down the road I will probably upgrade my collection, but I plan on keeping all of the coins from this exercise. Down the road I will probably have several type sets, and I'm okay with that.

Another coin that will look better in my 7070 instead of in this ICG plastic:
    Merc.jpg
For the price, and being MS64 FB, I feel it is a good pickup for my album. I'll probably give it a dip and neutralize once it comes in. I have added some other moderns to the album as well that I will need to image.
    Back to the hunt...

Dip won't be required. I'm actually glad the sellers photos were poor, because this turned out to be a really nice coin. Photos showed a lot of shadows I guess. Here are some better shots.
