here's a new little indo-sasanian i picked up for cheap..... chaulukyas of gujarat 1120-1210 ad ar drachum 15mm, 4.3 g o: head (nose is to right) r: abstract fire altar (i think i have it right side up?)
Looks like its oriented correctly. I always find these disorienting unless you look at a Sassanid coin right beforehand.
Agreed these can be difficult. I agree the orientation is correct. The "fire altar" flame comes to a point on these coins. :hail:
Anyone seeing this coin, and thinking it just looks like a glob of squiggly lines, should look at a Sassanian coin. This is a derivative of those, and after seeing a Sassanid you will see the portrait and fire alter on these. Here is our own Doug Smith's page on these interesting coins: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/gadpaisa.html
Another type of these to add to the list Original Type: Shahanshah Khurso II AR Drachm Hepthalite Counterstamp Ohrmazd-Ardaxšīr (AW) mint. RY 25 (AD 615/616) Extra: Contemporary Hepthalite gouge in the reverse margin (talked about here: http://www.cointalk.com/t209820/) I've been collecting a group around this type for the last 6 months, and now have 3.. The one above, a Gadhaiya Paisa (Indo-Sassanid) and a Tabaristan (Arab-Sassanid). 2. Gadhaiya Paisa c. 1000 AD Sassanian style bust r/fire altar Mitch.424 EF, good silver 3. Tabaristan Al Rashid 786-809 AD Ar dirhem 23-24 mm Sassanian style bust r/fire altar “Afzut” type EF, good silver No pictures of those two yet... Fixing my scanner (again... )
