Coin was listed and described as a 1941 Proof Washington Quarter. Looks like a polished business strike to me once I got the coin in hand. Obviously, I don't think the original pictures were a true representation of the actual coin. Thoughts? Original eBay Pictures... My pictures with coin in hand... Seller does have a 14 day return policy. I have not contacted him yet.
Seller does have a 14 day return policy. I have not contacted him yet. Do and get it into the mail today with tracking for the return. Same coin but the first images hide a bunch or faults.
I absolutely plan to return the coin. I just wanted to make sure to satisfy my own curiosity that it definitely wasn't a proof coin in bad shape but a polished business strike.
Curiosity: Are those actual hits on the coin or dust? It looks like someone feather dusted the coin or something. The first picture actually looks different than the second. Also, without knowing the differences in dies used that year, I would say poorly struck, then circulated proof. Edit: Can you link to the auction?
No it's not dust. I did take it to my LCS who is very knowledgeable. He looked at it and immediately said it was a polished business strike.
No, I trust his opinion, but was curious what everyone else thought. Just because he is knowledgeable doesn't mean I don't want to hear other opinions.
I would trust CT guys over the local brick and mortar guys too. They have to be generalists and we have specialists for almost every collecting interest.
Yes. I believe the Type B Reverse began in 1937? For that matter, yes, the reverse is the tell tale sign for determining business strike from proof regardless or relative wear or damage.
Happens that I have one of those (1941 Proof 25¢) on hand compare the reverse to this. and we come up with a "Item not as described."
Thanks LindeDad for posting that pic for comparison. I contacted the seller and he/she was very cordial and I will be dropping the coin off in the mail tomorrow for the return.
