..that I found metal detecting. I dinged up the rim a little at the 2:00 position. Wish more of these would pop outta the ground. Found it last 2 years ago at a park. Jim

Very good find. I really need to bring my metal detector up north. Nothing here in DE but modern coins.

ND, you would think there would be better finds in the original 13 states since we have the longest history. Maybe the soil on the east coast eats coins more than in Michigan, or, maybe we need some tips on where to look. Jimmie, do you have a "top ten" list of places to find those Barber Halves and Indian Cents?? :D

I have thought that many times myself. Here in Delaware we have a beach in the southern part of the state that the locals call coin beach. Appearantly after big storms so many Spanish coins wash up on the beach that you can find them just by looking. Now I have found one Spanish cob since moving here, and that was found while diving. There are many shipwrecks off of the coast, so I guess it is possible for hurricanes and major storms to wash some up. Of course, maybe I just moved here too late :D

Allthough I found this coin at a little park. Most all of my old coin finds come from old home sites that people are still living in.
I have some old maps of my area that show where the old homes are located. I drive to those spots and if the house is still standing I'll go and knock on the door and ask permission to detect their property. I get about a 50% yes no reply.
The hardest part is just getting the nerve up to go and ask. But, if I want those old coins I go and do it. Most people are real nice about it either way they respond to ya.
I might get out today. Its been rainy but I think its supposed to let up later on.
Last weekend I hit an old church site in a county over from me. Found 4 indian heads in real nice shape. Plus some other neat do dads.
I'll try any place where people gathered back in the day but most parks and obvious places have been detected pretty hard. Thats where the research pays off plus old home sites. A lot of home sites are virgin territory because people just don't wanna ask.
Sorry for rambling but I just love this hobby of detecting for old coins. Anytime I can help anyone detecting wise, I would be glad to. Jim

I'm amazed at the condition of your Barber Half. Any coins I've found in the soil here in NJ have been in terrible condition (even the modern coins). I don't metal detect (yet) but I'm starting to think it might be a lot of fun to start (just not here in New Jersey) :D

There are some guys from NJ on the metal detecting forum I hang out at sometimes. They find some great old coins. Not in too bad of shape either. The indian heads they find don't hold up to well but silver stands the test of time just about in any ground.

I have seen some very cool Colonial coins from there and other states out east. Just have to learn your detector and where to go. A lot of guys out east have great success at old cellar holes out in the woods. Jim
