I've been browsing through my silver dollar collection and came across a 1922 Peace Dollar with strong striking. I would have to say it's the best of all the peace dollars I own. Now, I know the chance of owning a matte proof are not very good and not in my favor, but I was wondering what to look for if in case it was a matte proof. I've done my research and know that it needs strong markings and a certain type of surface among a few other things. I'm at a dead end and was wondering if there was any other way of identifying such a coin. I've tried taking pictures, but I can't get the file size down below the requirements for this site.

One of the quickest things to look at is the spike by the right edge of the E in LIBERTY. If the spike just comes up to the top edge of the bottom bar of the E it is either a matte proof, or the high relief business strike (only one piece currently known, last sale $125,000). On the regular low relief coins that spike almost reaches the bottom edge of the middle bar of the E.

If you think you might have one of the good ones, then look at the reverse. Here you are looking at the ray that passes below the E in ONE, that passes through the right upright of the N and is parallel to the diagonal of the N. If that ray ends above the left upright it is the common low relief business strike. On the Matte Proof and the high relief business strike it ends above the center of the O.

If this helps you find one of the high relief 1922 peace dollars I want at least 10%. :D They made over 35,000 of them, there should be more of them out there. You would think that there must be some of them out there hiding in those common date bulk dollar rolls.

Thanks for the info. For now I'm going to say its not, but the lettering, rim and head strike appear to be strong. I'll see if I can get a picture on here tomorrow. I doubt it is one but it is different from my other peace dollars. There was one reed that was wider than the rest which is also different. At least there is a pcgs dealer not far from where I live. But I thought I would post the coin on here before I drove in. It's not a high relief and I'm doubting that it is indeed a matte proof. But it does seem different than my other dollars.
