Too big. You thought the public had a problem with golden dollars??? Wait till you try and force them to use Ikes.....
Many younger people have never seen an Ike (or Kennedy half for that matter), which allows me to sell them (three for five bucks) at the local flea market. I personally use them in circulation whenever I can, along with Sacs, SBA's, Presidential dollars and Kennedy halves. I usually pick up a few of each of these at the local bank every week. However, as stated above, the Ike will never circulate, but the others may, especially when the transition happens: http://www.cointalk.com/t228974/
The American public has traditionally balked at big coins. Morgans and Peace Dollars never circulated very much which is why so many are available in pristine condition today. The smaller golden dollars have a better chance of getting into circulation if only the US would just drop the paper dollar. It was done in Canada back in the eighties and initially there were grumbles and grunts but poll any self respecting Canadian today and he'll tell you he loves his Loonies and Toonies........
i believe they should be back into circulation, just how some people use $2 bills still.. get them out and get them known to new collectors, when people see stuff like that it gets them interested and they may research the coin (or $2 bill) and then a few "related search results" clicks later, they are interested in coins and may start collecting them, for this reason, i believe it is a good idea :thumb:
i agree. i know some guys at my school who are willing to pay $10+ each for an Ike and $3 for a kennedy half. i also have sold some SBAs for $5 and (brand new)two dollar bills for $7.50
If that true, then I will be rich man. I have 700+ IKEs and I brought them in range $1.10 to $1.25 per IKE coins.
