I wanted some opinions on whether anyone knows if this coin has partial edge lettering or if it is just worn? You can barely make out some of the lettering that is why I am asking. It weighs 8 grams on my scale and others I weighed have weighed 8.0 grams to a little less. Thanks for the help!
I measured the coin and it is the same size as another that I measured. Here are pics. The coin on the left is the coin with the error. Also, thank you for your replies!:smile
If it measures the same as the other coin then it looks like you're good to go. Treashunt mentioned that he thought it was a 'partial' and now I'm inclined to agree with him. The reason why I wanted you to measure it is because there are some unscrupulous types out there who grind the edge lettering off.
I have a little bit of knowledge on this.. I have looked at literally hundreds of thousands of the Adams Dollars and I don't recall seeing a light roll. Take a real close look at the edge of the coin, make sure you see NO straight lines either around or edge to edge. I have seen many of them where people tried to eliminate the edge lettering and some of them are pretty good. You certainly can not rule out it being tampered with based on these pictures, but you can with coin in hand. Just an FYI There are also different fonts that were used on the edge of the Adams Dollars. You can see more information at Potters website or I believe there is a website called smalldollars.com that you can check out. If you want the coin authenticated let me know and we can make it happen.
Jim, I took a better picture of the edge and it looks to me like half of the edge might have been filed off. That and the coin shows 2 different color tones. So, I am assuming someone took a file or something to it. Maybe the picture can give you a better idea of what happened. Thanks for the help. -Steve
Okay, how much is Jim paying you? Sheesh. Yes, I agree, Jim is kinda okay smart. But, Ken! You are really pushing for the brown nose of the year award!
I don't think it has been altered, I think it is just "light edge lettering". One thing I do find interesting are the measurement pictures. As seen in the pictures both coins are pretty much identical in size. However that size is shown as 23.5 mm! That is 3 mm smaller than the specs for the coin, and smaller than the specs for a quarter! (24.3 mm)
Conder101: on my micrometer the first row of numbers is .05mm, the second row is millimeters, the third row is inches and the fourth row is 1/128th of an inch. It took me awhile to learn how to read it too (lol), but if you line up the zero from the first line with the number on the second line, I think that is what the measurement should be. So it should be about 26mm. Sorry, I didn't post pics of the micrometer so people would know what they are looking at pertaining to what measurements each line represented.:smile Also, here are more pics to help identify whether this is a partial. In most of the pictures you can clearly see the top half, but the bottom half is unreadable in some areas. View attachment 267964
I dont think that it has been tampered with based on those pictures. My guess is that its just a light roll.. One thing that I did find strange and was verified through Ken Potter was that the tolerances in these dollars didnt seem to apply all that well. They were all over the place.. Nothing drastic, but.. in a single roll there were variations in Diams.. If this particular coin was on the smaller size of what we had seen, I can understand the light roll on the edge. The coloring I have seen many times like that on the edge of the Adams. Was a fun trip I had with these. If I recall correctly Doug got to see a picture of the very double edged Adam found. I think he said.. WOW. get it on ebay quick! : )
Forgive me I had a brain cramp yesterday. I have the same micrometer but for some STUPID reason I was reading the edge of the jaw on the mm scale instead of the 0 mark indicator. I know how to use one but just didn't read it properly. (I hope I didn't do anything important yesterday.)
Jim, I don't know if you received the PM I sent you (there was nothing in my PM Sent box). I was wanting to know if this should be authenticated and if so how can we do it? Thanks, Steve
Aw heck, I would send it in for the pure joy of the find~!~~~~~One dealer might say this and one might say that, I am only a student, but imo you might have something there.....
Hmm. let me go and look, didnt receive a you have a PM waiting message though.. It was in there and I have replied.. hopefully there is enough information in it to answer your questions. Have a wonderful weekend y'all!
