I like the doubled date and stars. You can count seven layers on some of the left stars.

This is a different coin. It's an 1878-S VAM 1D with die gouges in the tail feathers.

    Excellent pictures.
What do you use for your microphotographs?
    Thanks

Thanks. I have a $200 stereo microscope that provides 30x and 60x magnification. I hold my digital camera up to one lens. I use MS Paint to reduce the images to 20% of their original size.

Nevst, is your avatar an 1886 morgan by any chance?

Yup. 1886-P VAM 21 on the Top 100 list (formerly VAM 1B). I still don't buy into the misplaced date theory. I supposed it could be part of an '8', but it's tough to visualize.

This VAM seems to be farely common. I still see them unattributed on different websites.
Hey, this looks like one for $17 if you need one....

I need a stereo microscope like you have---the only problem is that as much as I can tell I would only need it once so it doesn't seem like a good buy for me right now.

But! You never know. I have a cheapie 'Digital Blue' and have found many unlisted repunched dates and mintmarks, along with misplaced dates on Barber dimes, quarters and half dollars.
So, you may only need it once, now, but...who knows.
I wish I could figure out how to post pictures from the photo file to show a nice RPM that I just found on a high grade 1897 O, previously unlisted.
    Good luck.

Well I have a mix-and-match set up that works sometimes but the camera is older and doesn't work all the time---my sister has a pro. camera and its nice but doesn't take as good close up's as this old one....

The O mintmark is one that I won here on CT from Nesvt---its an HOT 50 O/O
    The D mintmark is a 1958 D/D/D Cent---
