Just wasted 45 minutes of my life

Over lunch, thought I would browse Ebay for ancients, auctions only. I usually use searches, so thought maybe it would be good to browse the entire ancient section.

Good Gosh! Is every single corroded, worn slick, "uncleaned" piece of garbage in the entire world up for sale as a "treasured keepsake" on Ebay nowadays? Man, what an enormous pile of dog poo! 99% of those coins are not worth a nickel, .9 percent have "starting prices 5 times what the coin is worth, and only one seller had decent coins at a decent starting price, and I already had him as a favorite seller.

No wonder I only go there rarely, and even then only use searches and favorites I have discovered over the years. 99% is one big lump of [edit].

Sorry, had to vent.

Indeed. It takes a lot of patient searching to find anything worthwhile. I only do it once in a while, if I have a few hours to kill.

 

I havent bought a coin on ebay in many months. People knock vcoins and other sites but its much better. I check ebay several times a day with ancients and it is pretty much muck.

Though I have to admit, past month there hasnt been much on vcoins either. Some nice high grade stuff with prices attached but things that interest me, its been pretty stagnant. Too many LRBs :/

 

I use saved searches. I'm automatically notified on my phone whenever anything is listed in the coin section with the words "Wooster," "Kilwa," "Tessera," and lead (in German, French, Italian, OR Spanish).

I haven't looked at closing listings on ebay in about two and a half years.

 

It's the same way with raw Franklin's on eBay. Either I am really picky and have high standards for raw Frankies, or the quality is just pitiful. I will look through hundreds, if not thousands, of listings before I find one worth going after.

 

Well, I have to admit I look on Ebay nearly every single night. Generally, I see half a dozen to a dozen coins I mark to "save in watch list". Most are coins I will only research and delete. However, one or two I might bid on the next day as long as the bidding hasn't gone crazy. Now, when you think about it, that is a pitiful amount of coins that make it to my point of bidding out of say hundreds of coins every day. It sounds crazy, but I continue to search and once in a while I find something worthwhile in my price range.

 

FeeBay is full of oddities. I saw a few bicentennial halves listed today that were advertised as "post Civil War". I'm really glad he put that in there because I always search for modern coins using those key words and bicentennial halves are a grey area for me because I'm never sure which era they fall into.

 

I do to sir, and usually with searches I have developed over the years. For fun I just went "into the trenches" to see all ancients being sold. Thank goodnss for saved searches. Without saved searches and some saved sellers, (most of which are no longer on Ebay), I could not imagine having to wade through that mountain of dreck that is Ebay nowadays.

I looked at the same amount of poo today in my back yard. (Courtesy of the dog :yes. Yep....it's the same.

 

I am always vigilant for a deal. I don't care what kind of trash I have to wade through. I actually prefer that the trash stay there so it makes it difficult for others to find "my deals." I just hope that if I ever sell coins, there is a line of people ready to pay me 5 x what they are worth, and leave good feedback. :rollling:

 

Oh I think everyone missed a major point .........You get 45 mins for lunch.....


I would say by wading through the poo I might buy 1 coin out of 10000 that I look at.

 

i probably do a 30 minutes of searching every week on average, and kind of enjoy it. considering how much time the average american spends in front of the tv watching the "real housewives of somewhere or another" or some such show....well....graded on that curve, its time well spent.

 

I know exactly what you mean by ebay. Thousands of junk listings and the one coin I like ends up going for $200.

 

I remember, in the early days, eBay had great coins, great dealers... Nowadays, it's all low grade LRB's, overpriced junk, or fakes... (too early for a brandy ?)

LOL ! Sorry for the 'LRB'. It's a quite common abbreviation for 'Late Roman Bronze'. Little River Band is quite nice too
